Chelsea are no strangers to loaning out young talent.

A report suggests that yet another could be soon ready to depart the West London side as early as January, but there are plans in place for the player to put pen to paper on a new long-term contract before leaving.

Chelsea’s current loan list stands at nine players including the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Andrey Santos and Gabriel Slonina.

Loan spells are a great way for players to get more game time when game time is hard to come by at a players parent club.

With that said, loans can also be an equally frustrating time for both player and parent club when game time is still not a regular occurrence, which has been the case for players such as Andrey Santos at Nottingham Forest, who has played just seven minutes off the bench in the league and one appearance in the Carabao Cup totaling just 97 minutes of game time.

Football Insider have reported, Ian Maatsen could leave Chelsea on loan in January if he pens a new long-term deal at the club.

Maatsen’s curret contract expires in June 2025 after Chelsea recently activated a 12-month extension clause.

It is thought that Chelsea are keen to maintain their asset by sealing his future with a new agreement.

Maatsen recently spoke about his lack of playing time – saying that he is “keeping his options open” and is aware that a “difficult decision” may have to be made if the situation does not change.

The young defender has made just two starts in nine total appearances for Chelsea.

He has been on three loan spells throughout his Chelsea career so far playing for Charlton Athletic, Coventry City and most recently Burnley of which he featured regularly in their promotional campaign.

During this period, Maatsen would be a part of Burnley’s winning of the Championship whilst playing in 42 of 46 matches, scoring 4 goals and assisting 6.

A departure would be expected should he put pen to paper and renewing a contract at Chelsea.

A rumored option for the Dutchman is a possible move to treble winners Manchester City after rumors have linked him in months gone by.
