In the mist of defeat yesterday, Pochettino seemed to give reassurance of his high standard commitment around the club by vowing to gather the squad together as part of the post match inquest as to what went wrong.

Those high standards and ruthlessness might have come across as premature as the latest reports seem to say different.

After the game, Pochettino told the PL; “It’s a young team, they need this type of situation to realise. We’ll go to the hotel, then train early tomorrow, no time off. We can’t blame players, it’s the team together. We need to understand the level we need to compete, and learn.”

However, according to today’s report in The Athletic, they seem to think differently. The Athletic described it as a “empty threat” with a day off going ahead as planned. This is also backed up with Nicolas Jackson being in Villarreal’s dressing room today, a game which was a 1pm kick off in the UK.

With exactly a week until our next game Pochettino will still have plenty of time to dissect Saturday’s result whilst still having long preparation time ahead of Brighton. Will the reaction help? Only time will tell.
